Twisting of Scripture

Throughout the years (at Calvary Temple) there have been teachings about honoring your parents.  Unfortunately, the practice at Calvary has been to shun your parents.  If we are to honor our parents why are we then instructed to curse them?  It is because of the subtle twisting of the 5th commandment of God done by Star Scott.

We all remember the teaching by Mr Scott in which he instructed us that the 5th commandment did not mean we are to honor our parents per se, it really means we honor God. Many of us shook our heads in confusion. The commandment seems straightforward enough, yet we were told that for years we had misunderstood the true meaning. Star Scott gave us the examples of parents who were wayward (meaning they disagreed with Calvary Temple leadership or teaching or actions). Therefore, since the parents were rebellious, we could not honor God by honoring our parents so we needed to cut off our parents in order to honor God.  (A nifty bit of circular reasoning.) However, the truth is, we honor God when we keep His commandment to honor our parents.

How did the 5th commandment get changed from this:

"Honor your father and mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.  Exodus 20:12."

to this:

"Cut off of all relationship with your parents if they leave Calvary Temple."

Well, here it is in Star Scott's own words - (the creation of a new scripture):

"Did you know the one (commandment) that Paul speaks about in the epistles in the New Testament says that you're to honor your father and mother in the Lord, and its the first commandment with promise" (I am that I am pt 4 November 2008).

Do you see the problem?  He has misquoted Exodus 20:12 by combining it with Ephesians 6:1.

Honor your father and mother (Ex 20:12)  plus
Obey your parents in the Lord for this is right.   (Eph 6:1-2)

Now becomes:  Honor your father and mother in the Lord.

Since we had so much teaching on obeying your parents in the Lord and all that entails - we are predisposed that when we hear "in the Lord" we know that means we only obey our parents if they are requiring us to do something that agrees with scripture.  But the 5th commandment says HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.....  it does not add "in the Lord".  The 5th commandment is not speaking to the actions of the father or mother, it is speaking to the actions of the son or daughter.

The Hebrew word for honor is "kabed" and derives from a root word meaning "weighty" (in terms of impressiveness or importance). ( http://biblehub.com/hebrew/3513.htm ) It is often used to refer to the glory of God.  It is used in the preceding verses which center on honoring God Himself. The commandment to honor one's parents is compared to honoring God, according to Jewish scholars. To the children of parents that you have cut off - do you ever wonder if God is pleased with your dishonoring of your parents? Please take note of the following scriptures:

Matthew 15: 3-9  Why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?  For God said, "Honor your father and mother" and "Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death".  But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father of mother is 'devoted to God,' they are not to 'honor their father or mother' with it.  Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.  You hypocrites!  Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:  These people honor me with their lips but their hearts are from me.  They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.

Ezekiel 21:17  He that curses father or mother, let him die the death.

Ephesians 6:1 speaks of honoring your parents and in the next verse,  obeying your parents - two different commands to children. Honoring your parents is to be done regardless - obeying them can be limited if the command is not consistent with scripture (or, in the Lord).

Here is another problem with the practice of cutting off parents according to the new scripture Mr Scott has created - the sin the parents are accused of is not a sin. But Mr Scott has a dilemma. He does not want children to talk with those who have left CT and hence learn the truth about the false teachings and sinful actions of leadership so he has to make a sin where there is no sin. Leadership will tell you those who have left are "out of order", they "did not leave the right way", or they are "spiritually adulterous". First, it is not a sin to leave CT without leadership's permission, second, there is absolutely NO WAY to leave CT the "right way" (as all who have tried every possible way of leaving have discovered), and third, you are not adulterous for attending another church.  On all counts, parents (and children and spouses also) are not in sin for leaving CT.

The children (no matter their age) of Calvary Temple have been falsely empowered to judge their parents rather than honor them.  They have been encouraged to disobey a clear biblical commandment and they have willingly forfeited one of the most precious relationships they have.

  1. I want to take this time to clear myself before God and before man. For the past 7 years I have disowned and cut off my parents and brother, as well as some close friends. I did so under the deception that this is true holiness. I did not see that my ways were wrong. I was “killing” (cutting off) my family and friends, thinking I was doing God service, thinking that I was being a true doer of the Word of God. I look back and am amazed at how deceived I truly was. Jesus said that a man’s enemies will be those of his own household and that children would rise up against their parents causing them to be put to death. That's exactly how Star Scott says marking is identified as, you cut off, you recognize and treat the marked person as though they were dead, I am sad to say that I had done this, My parents were in my mind, dead to me. I ask Jesus, my parents, and my friends to forgive me for the wrong I have done to them. I was so concerned with honoring God that I left out love and mercy which triumphs over judgment. This righteousness is that of the Pharisees, of which I was, but am no longer. Now, I love and show kindness to all men. I am thankful to be where I am today, though I wished it could have been achieved via a different route.

I now give honor to my parents, who in spite of all the hatred that I showed to them, did nothing but love me, holding no bitterness towards anyone, but showing the love of Jesus. They are indeed true examples of the love of God.

Calvary Temple is a true example of the Pharisees. They hold to the keeping of the letter of the law. If you miss services you are seen as doing spiritually worse. They have no real love and compassion for people, though they say they do, you have to look at their actions, and line that up with the Bible, you have to see how Star Scott twists the scripture for his own purposes. I went to Calvary Temple for 27 years, born and raised, graduated from. This is my advice to anyone considering visiting or attending this place: Stay away from Calvary Temple, there's a chance your family could be divided, like many others in the past.
